Not quite satisfied with setting a full-year sales record in 2011 and already being named the 2012 North American Car of the Year, the Hyundai Elantra is reloading for the 2013 model year with a number of new upgrades designed to further satisfy customers. (And remember, that’s in addition to new models that will be launching this year, the sporty Elantra Coupe and the versatile Elantra GT five-door hatchback.)
For starters, the Elantra GLS with a manual transmission will now come standard with what used to be the optional Comfort Package. As a result, standard equipment on the entry-level member of the Elantra family will include air conditioning, cruise control, 16-inch steel wheels, a telescopic steering wheel and solar glass with a “shade band” for its windshield. The automatically transmissioned Elantra GLS with Hyundai’s Preferred Package—preferred by the highest number of Elantra buyers—also adds heated front seats.
Moving up to the Elantra Limited, buyers of the 2013 model will enjoy a power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support as a new standard feature; an advanced dual automatic temperature control system with a clean-air ionizer and automatic defogger has been added to the Limited Technology Package, too.
But what doesn’t change for 2013 is the Elantra’s impressive fuel-efficiency performance. Regardless of whether it’s equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a similarly cogged automatic, the car can post an EPA line of 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway/33 mpg combined, making it one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles currently on sale in the United States.
