After winning the North American Car of the Year Award when it was first launched in 2009, the revolutionary Hyundai Genesis—available in both sedan and coupe body styles—continues to show customers that it has what it takes to compete with the big boys in the more luxurious segments of the U.S. auto industry.
The Genesis Sedan, which was refreshed last year with its most powerful engine ever—a 5.0-liter V-8 capable of 429 hp—was recently honored for posting the top marks in the Midsize Premium Car category in the 2012 J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). Significantly, since the VDS evaluates the long-term dependability of vehicles after three years on the road, this means the Genesis captured its title in its very first year of eligibility. As a result, Hyundai itself also finished with its highest overall ratings in the VDS, coming in at ninth place.
“Our goal is to design and build cars that meet and exceed consumers’ expectations not only off the showroom floor, but through the duration of their ownership experience. Earning Hyundai’s first-ever top-10 finish in the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study demonstrates that our efforts are paying dividends,” said Erwin Raphael, director of engineering and quality, Hyundai Motor America. “It’s equally gratifying to see the Genesis Sedan, a content-rich model with all the features you expect of a premium car, outperform powerful competitors in its category. Long-term dependability translates to a positive ownership experience and brings customers back to the Hyundai brand in the future.”
The Genesis Coupe has now been updated as well, and it will launch as a 2013 model in March featuring an aggressive new exterior enhanced by a redesigned front fascia, grille, headlights, fog lights, hood and wheel choices, with new LED daytime running lights and LED-accented taillights getting added to the options list. More changes are in store under the hood, too, where both the Genesis’ potent 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 and a new V-6 with direct injection are available. Using premium fuel, the former now puts out 275 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque and the latter makes 348 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque; with regular gas, the numbers are 260 hp/260 lb.-ft. of torque for the four-cylinder powerplant and 344 hp/292 lb.-ft. of torque with the 3.8-liter V6. Additionally, both engines can be mated to Hyundai’s proprietary eight-speed automatic transmission.
