With sales up by more than 300 percent in May—and more than 50 percent through the first five months of the year—it’s obvious that the 2012 Hyundai Accent is satisfying a lot of customers. But it’s not quite satisfying enough for Hyundai, which is launching the 2013 Accent with a major value upgrade.
For the new model year, the Accent GLS entry model will still offer a highly affordable MSRP, but it also will boast standard features that include:
- Air conditioning
- A six-speaker AM/FM/SiriusXM/CD/MP3 sound system with iPod and auxiliary input jacks
- Power-adjustable and heated outside mirrors
- Body-color exterior door handles
- An interior sunglasses holder
- Remote keyless entry with a panic button
- Comfort-enhancing cloth-insert door trims
Still available in both sedan and five-door hatchback configurations, the 2013 Elantra will continue to provide motivation from one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines. It’s a 1.6-liter I4 with gasoline direct injection and dual continuously variable valve timing, and is capable of achieving EPA marks of 30 mpg city/40 mpg highway regardless of transmission choice. But that peppy powerplant also produces 138 hp and 123 lb.-ft. of torque, besting rivals like the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, Nissan Versa and Mazda2. Further, because of the Accent’s low curb weight it also offers a better power-to-weight ratio than all those competitors—and the Chevy Sonic.
The 2013 Hyundai Accent is on sale now, priced from $14,595.
