What’s next for the midsize hybrid sedan that last year earned more sales than either the Ford Fusion or Chevy Malibu hybrids? For the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, it will be new, higher EPA marks coupled with a new, lower MSRP—and a notably more refined driving experience.
The gains in efficiency and drivability go hand in hand, as both come courtesy of an upgraded hybrid propulsion system. The new setup features a larger-capacity hybrid starter generator, a higher-output electric motor, and a more powerful lithium-polymer battery that’s also smaller and lighter than the unit used in the 2012 car. And along with fuel-efficiency ratings that improve to 36 mpg city/40 mpg highway/38 mpg combined, the Sonata Hybrid will see an increase in all-electric driving range, smoother acceleration from a full stop, and even a 13 percent jump in trunk space.
But as mentioned, what won’t be jumping is the Sonata Hybrid’s starting price. In fact, with an MSRP that opens at $25,650, it will cost $200 less than the 2012 model—and $1,550 less than the 2013 Ford Fusion.
And even though the Sonata Hybrid is the most affordable hybrid in the midsize sedan segment, it’s also one of the best-equipped cars in any of the mainstream classes. Standard features include a distinctive style upgrade, LED exterior lighting, Bluetooth technology, the Blue Link telematics system, Hyundai’s “Supervision” instrument cluster, heated front seats, rear-seat climate vents, Bluetooth technology, and a Virtual Engine Sound System for the vehicle’s otherwise-quiet all-electric drive mode.
Which means the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid should make plenty of noise in the marketplace when it goes on sale in the near future.
