After setting a new world record last year in winning the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb—in a modified Hyundai Genesis coupe—driver Rhys Millen is headed back to the mountain this year to try to make it two in a row—and this time, he’ll have Hyundai company.
Millen himself will pilot an all-new, purpose-built rear-wheel-drive racecar that will compete in the unlimited class with a retuned Hyundai Lambda V8 engine that makes more than 900 hp and 800 lb.-ft. of torque. Of course, the car will be wrapped in fresh sheet metal that shows a distinct family resemblance to the Genesis Coupe, while also relying on production powertrain components including the engine block, cylinder heads and bearings.
Then, Rhys Millen Racing will again campaign the record-setting Genesis Coupe racer on the Peak in the Time Attack 2WD class, with a driver who will be named at a later date. And remember, that’s the exact same race car that Millen also used to compete in the 2012 Formula Drift series, representing a true “testament to both the extreme durability of Hyundai engineering as well as the tuning versatility of the RMR team.”
“We’re certainly proud to renew our successful partnership with Rhys Millen Racing to take on the unique challenge of international motorsports known as Pikes Peak,” said Steve Shannon, vice president of Marketing for Hyundai Motor America. “Last year’s all-time world record, set by Millen in the production-based Genesis Coupe, was a defining milestone in Hyundai’s quest to build thrilling and durable rear-drive performance vehicles that are as capable on the road as they are in the rigors of competitive motorsport.”
