Even though the 2011 Hyundai Sonata boasted some of the best EPA ratings in its class, the automaker worked diligently to make its best seller a greener choice for 2012. So, not only did the Sonata raise its fuel economy by 2 mpg in both city and combined driving for the current model year (when equipped with its six-speed automatic transmission), it also was literally named a Greener Choice by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE).
With a new EPA line of 24 mpg city/35 mpg highway/28 mpg combined, the automatic transmission Sonata now offers the same ratings as the model with a six-speed manual; further, it earned its ACEEE recognition—given only to “widely available” gas-powered vehicles with autoboxes—for the seventh consecutive year.
It all adds up to an award-winning package that recently won its segment in the Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership Awards and was named Best Family Sedan in the 2012 MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Awards
And remember, the Sonata offers even higher EPA ratings with its hybrid powertrain: The Sonata Hybrid is capable of 35 mpg city/40 mpg/37 mpg combined. Making the car an even smarter option is the fact that Hyundai recently introduced the industry’s first Lifetime Hybrid Battery Replacement Guarantee for the car. The new protection policy even covers the cost of recycling the old battery.
“Sonata’s acknowledgment as a leader in fuel efficiency for the seventh year in a row only strengthens our commitment to delivering sustainable solutions for consumers,” said John Shon, Sonata product manager, Hyundai Motor America. “The Sonata offers class-above interior volume compared to its key competitors and provides the best fuel economy in the EPA Large Car segment with an exceptional 28 mpg combined fuel economy rating.”
