Hyundai’s hottest hatch—the new 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo—will soon be racing into local dealerships sporting an MSRP of $21,950. It’s a surprisingly small price for a car that offers a surprisingly enthusiastic driving experience, backed by 201 hp worth of turbocharged I4 engine. Also packing a 195 lb.-ft. of torque, the Veloster Turbo provides owners with a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio, best-in-class specific output and best-in-class highway fuel efficiency of 38 mpg when fitted with its standard six-speed manual transmission. (A six-speed automatic is optional.)
Hyundai’s powertrain expertise is a key enabler of this impressive mix of power and fuel efficiency, which comes courtesy of technologies like a twin-scroll turbocharger and gasoline direct injection.
Then, in addition to performance that distinguishes it from potential rivals, the Veloster Turbo also distinguishes itself from the rest of the Veloster family with its own unique style cues. Among them: A bolder front grille that houses LED-accented headlights, sharply sculpted side skirts, prominent rear-diffuser vents and a redesigned rear bumper, 18-inch alloy wheels setoff with chrome inserts, and center-mounted dual-exhaust tips.
More enthusiast-oriented upgrades are on display in the car’s cabin, where leather seats feature embroidered “Turbo” stitching and drivers can rely on a model-specific electroluminescent gauge cluster with two thin-film transistor screens for interactively keeping track of various vehicle systems. Push-button start, heated front sport seats and alloy pedals are standard as well.
Other Turbo-exclusive content ranges from Hyundai’s first matte-style exterior finish, showcasing stealthy-looking Matte Gray paint, to a sport-tuned steering system and a special Graphite Black interior with Blue accents.
